Effective today, all new Linodes and NodeBalancers will receive forward DNS records using a new domain: ip.linodeusercontent.com. We will serve these records in addition to the members.linode.com and nodebalancer.linode.com records, which we have historically created for these services.
On Monday, October 18, 2021, all newly-created Linodes will have reverse DNS set to their new ip.linodeusercontent.com domain by default.
We have written a guide that covers all the details of these new domains. We have also included an example of the changes below.
li123-45.members.linode.com → 192-0-2-45.ip.linodeusercontent.com
nb-192-0-2-89.dallas.nodebalancer.linode.com → 192-0-2-89.ip.linodeusercontent.com
In the future, we will be phasing out members.linode.com and nodebalancer.linode.com and will stop serving records for those domains for new Linodes and NodeBalancers. At that point, you will no longer be able to access or use your Linodes and NodeBalancers using members.linode.com or nodebalancer.linode.com, respectively, and will be required to use your new domain on ip.linodeusercontent.com.
Until then, all Linodes on members.linode.com and nodebalancer.linode.com forward records will continue to work.
Why are we doing this?
This change will help improve our overall platform security by restricting cookie domain scopes to prevent sensitive cookies from being read from attacker-controlled origins, improving our vulnerability disclosure program by further clarifying which assets are in scope, lowering the potential for phishing attacks, and improving overall asset tracking and management. In addition, there are currently more than 2 million websites on members.linode.com and nodebalancer.linode.com indexed by Google, potentially harming search rank.
Please feel free to open a ticket in the Cloud Manager if you have any questions or concerns.
