We’re rolling out ultra-fast, better-performing, and more reliable NVMe block storage across all 11 of our global data centers. We’re starting in our Atlanta location, which is available now, with NVMe expanding to the remainder of our network in the coming months.
Block storage rates will remain at $0.10/GB per month. Customers with existing volumes in our 10 other global data centers will be able to migrate their volumes when NVMe block storage becomes available.
NVMe is the hardware interface for next-generation SSDs (solid-state devices). The technology is a significant improvement over traditional spinning hard disk drives, with a 10-20x increase in throughput and up to 2000x improvement in IOPS. With NVMe-backed block storage, you can experience a significant performance upgrade for database storage and other tasks where high storage speeds and consistency are critical.
This fleet-wide upgrade is our first to use erasure-coded clusters, a method for storing data in Ceph that uses an algorithm to slice data into chunks, resulting in significant improvement in storage efficiency over replicated clusters. Erasure coding allows us to extract 160% more usable storage out of the same raw disk capacity. It’s an incredible increase in storage efficiency done in a way that allows us to upgrade performance without increasing our price.
Visit our block storage documentation and learn how to:
- Create a block storage volume
- Attach a block storage volume to a Linode
- Scale up your volume
- Boot from a volume
- and much more.
